PASSIVE FIRE SOLUTIONS FOR

BAL: FZ Systems

BAL-FZ (Flame Zone) represents the highest level of bushfire risk, where buildings may be exposed to direct flame contact, extreme radiant heat, and ember attack.

Trafalgar Fire supports BAL-FZ construction through the FyreWALL BoardeX BAL: FZ and FyreROOF BoardeX BAL: FZ.

These are engineered solutions designed to deliver consistent, tested performance across the entire exterior of the building. Being tested for use in BAL: FZ zones.

What is a BAL Rating?

Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) is a classification system used in Australia to define the level of bushfire risk a site is exposed to, based on factors like vegetation type, distance to hazard, and potential exposure to ember attack, radiant heat, and direct flame contact.

BAL-LOW: Very low risk of bushfire exposure with minimal construction requirements.

BAL-12.5: Low ember attack risk with low levels of radiant heat exposure.

BAL-19: Moderate ember attack with increasing radiant heat requiring basic protective construction measures.

BAL-29: High ember attack and significant radiant heat exposure requiring more robust bushfire-resistant materials.

BAL-40: Very high risk with extreme radiant heat and potential for burning debris exposure, requiring highly resistant construction systems.

BAL-FZ (Flame Zone): Extreme bushfire exposure including direct flame contact, requiring the highest level of construction performance and tested systems.

POWERED BY:

BoardeX is a non-combustible, fibre-reinforced building board designed for extreme conditions, including BAL: FZ construction.

It provides a durable external sheathing layer that resists fire, moisture, and weather exposure – All while remaining vapor permeable for long-term building health.

Engineered for high-performance BAL: FZ Systems, BoardeX supports compliant bushfire construction across Australia’s most demanding environments.

Benefits of using BoardeX

Exceptional Fire Resistance:
BoardeX offers outstanding fire resistance, surpassing the requirements for BAL:FZ areas. It complies with AS 1530.8.2, AS 3959, and AS 1530.4-2014 standards, providing superior bushfire protection, making it ideal for fire-sensitive locations.
Benefits of using BoardeX

Ease of Installation:
BoardeX’s lightweight nature makes handling and installation easy, eliminating the need for heavy machinery. Its on-site cut-and-shape capability streamlines the construction process, while its low maintenance makes it a cost-effective solution for both immediate and long-term use.
Benefits of using BoardeX

Weather and Mould Resistance:
BoardeX offers exceptional durability, withstanding external exposure for up to 12 months. Its vapour-permeable yet water-resistant properties prevent moisture buildup and mould growth, ensuring structural integrity even in high humidity.
Benefits of using BoardeX

Sustainability
BoardeX is a sustainable choice, being low-carbon and free from crystalline silica, which contributes to a healthier environment without compromising performance.
Benefits of using BoardeX

Thermal Insulation and Energy Efficiency:
BoardeX enhances thermal insulation, meeting strict energy efficiency standards. This reduces energy consumption and lowers the carbon footprint of buildings.
Benefits of using BoardeX

Designed for Ventilation
BoardeX uses the worlds most advanced vapour permiability technology. The orange glass matt coat is designed specifically to prevent liquid water from penetrating, whilist allowing moisture trapped in the air to evaporate through. Allowing the ceiling cavity to 'breathe', compared to alternatives which catches moisture and leads to rot and mould growth.
Benefits of using BoardeX

Trafalgar Support:
Trafalgar provided invaluable support throughout the project, from material supply to expert guidance and site visits, helping overcome technical challenges and ensuring project success.

FAQs

No, BoardeX is a vapour permeable, rigid air barrier, but it can be optionally included.

Yes, the joint should be sealed with the T-Stop sealant to provide a fire and temporary weather seal.

BoardeX has been shown to remain exposed without degradation for 12 months at the Trafalgar head office in
Sydney.

It can be scored and snapped similar to plasterboard, or cut with hand/power tools.

Yes, there is a BoardeX roof system rated for BAL- FZ. Contact Trafalgar for more details.

For applications where vegetation is 10m or more away, -/30/30 is required and can be achieved with 1x layer of
BoardeX. If vegetation is within 10m, BAL-FZ is required, and can be achieved with 2x layers of BoardeX.
